Thursday Night the 7th between 8pm & Midnight: EMMYLOU HARRIS & RODNEY CROWELL - Old Yellow Moon

It's been some 40 years since they met, when Rodney lent his song "Blueberry Wine" to one of Emmylou's early albums.  Now, we finally have a full-length collaboration from them, Old Yellow Moon.  Harris has a great history of duets, from Gram Parsons, Linda Rondstadt and Mark Knopfler, to countless artists she's supported as guest vocalist; this one is no exception.  Produced by Brian Ahern (Harris’ ex-husband and early producer) and featuring members of Harris' original Hot Band (which included Crowell), this is sure to be a WNCW favorite for 2013.  And, the CD is

Thursday Night the 28th between 8pm & Midnight: WAYNE HANCOCK - Ride

Wayne 'The Train' Hancock is back with his first album in 3 years, a strong one called Ride (released this week.)   "Wayne Hancock has more Hank Sr. in him than either I or Hank Williams Jr.  He is the real deal."   - Hank Williams III.

Thursday night the 21st between 8pm & Midnight: RICHARD THOMPSON - Electric

Richard Thompson’s latest album, Electric, produced by Buddy Miller, comes in what is arguably his most creatively productive period in a career that stretches back some 45 years. Whether featuring electric or acoustic guitar, the songs are built around the tightly focused core of Thompson’s current trio: drummer Michael Jerome (Better Than Ezra, John Cale) and bassist Taras Prodaniuk (Lucinda Williams, Elvis Costello) complementing the leader through a full range of emotional explorations. Stop in and hear what the fuss is all about during the Peak of the Week, Thursday at 8 pm.

Thursday Night the 14th between 8pm & Midnight: KELLY WILLIS & BRUCE ROBISON - Cheater's Game

These two fine (and married) singer/songwriters in Americana & Country have another collaboration, this time with notable covers by Dave Alvin and Robert Earl Keen, among other WNCW favorites.  Tune in as Brad mixes each of the tunes into the Thursday night mix.  Happy Valentine's Day!

Thursday Night the 7th between 8pm & Midnight: ERIN MCKEOWN - Manifestra

The personal merges with the political on Erin McKeown's latest release, "Manifestra".  Drum loops, layered vocals and synthesizers merge with her electric guitar and other studio tricks, but there is also an accompanying all-solo-acoustic collection of these new songs.  Guest singers include Ryan Montbleau, Anais Mitchell, Sean Hayes, and David Wax Museum.

Thursday the 31st between 8pm & Midnight: BEN HARPER & CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE - Get Up!

Ben Harper is back, this time with harmonica blues great Charlie Musselwhite, and on the soulful Stax record label!  No Depression magazine calls it "the first great album of 2013...I mean, it’s Ben Harper.  It’s Charlie Musselwhite.  Do the math."  We'll add it all up together with the rest of our Thursday night mix on the last day of the first month.

Peak of the Week: Thursday Night the 24th between 8pm & Midnight: MARY GAUTHIER - Live at Blue Rock

One of our favorite contemporary songwriters, Mary Gauthier delivers her self-described "country-noir" style with an authenticity and rawness matched by few.  Recorded in an intimate venue -- an artists’ ranch in Wimberley, Texas – this new live album features some of our favorite songs of hers that touch on the unsettling side of contemporary American society: executed murderers, unrepentant alcoholics, troubled teenage adoptees, even drag queens in limousines.  She is accompanied by former Duhk Tania Elizabeth on fiddle and percussionist Mike Meadows.

Thursday Night between 8pm & Midnight: BUDDY MILLER & JIM LAUDERDALE - Buddy & Jim

It's two of our favorites, together at last!  Actually, Buddy and Jim have a history of musical collaborations that go back to at least 1994, and Miller's guitar work and more have blended with Lauderdale's singing and songwriting numerous times since then (including at each year's Americana Music Association Awards Show, where Buddy serves as bandleader and Jim as host.)  Destined to be one of the strongest collaborations of the year, it's Buddy & Jim for your Peak of the Week this Thursday night after The World Cafe.

Thursday Night between 8pm & Midnight: POKEY LAFARGE & THE SOUTH CITY THREE - Live in Holland

With a great blend of early jazz, string ragtime, country blues and western swing, Pokey LaFarge is one of those old souls that has come back to remind us of the great roots of true American music.  He and his band recorded this up-tempo live album last April in Amsterdam.  We'll feature it throughout your Thursday night music mix.

Thursday Night between 8pm & Midnight: SNOWGOOSE - Harmony Springs

Tune in Thursday night as we feature one of our favorite new acts and releases, the debut from Scotland's Snowgoose.  Comprised of members of Teenage Fanclub, the Soup Dragons, and Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan's band, Snowgoose is fronted by vocalist Anna Sheard, who makes her performing debut (so far as we know) with this band.  Influences also include early '70's British folk-rock groups like Fairport Convention, and West Coast American sounds as well.  This new release from a new discovery is already a Top 100 pick among WNCW listeners!
