Morning Edition 10/1/12: 'IKE'S BLUFF: PRESIDENT EISENHOWER'S SECRET BATTLE TO SAVE THE WORLD'
President Eisenhower was a war hero as well as a President. But how many of us can really remember hearing anything much about his two terms as President of the United States? Author Evan Thomas turns the lights on a President in the vein of John Wayne: Tough, but a man who worked mostly behind the scenes using surrogates to act on his behalf. It was all a part of his two-term struggle to never tell anyone what he was really thinking about pending wars, the use of the nuclear weapon, his compassion and understanding of how the world really works, and his long-term serious illnesses. Join me as I talk to Evans about this US President that could teach a thing or two to almost every president since - or before, for that matter.
