Monday Night March 30th at 8pm: ERIC CLAPTON - 461 Ocean Boulevard

ERIC CLAPTON - 461 Ocean Boulevard

Following his side project work with Derek & the Dominos, and fight against a heroin addiction, Slowhand took residence in this house in Golden Beach, Florida for a month or so in 1974 to work on his second studio album. While it has been faulted by some for being too polished and without enough room for Clapton's guitar to stretch out, it also has an impressive mix of stellar originals ("Let It Grow", "Give Me Strength") and covers (from Bob Marley, Johnny Otis, Elmore James, Robert Johnson.) "I Shot the Sheriff" was his first #1 hit (and certainly helped introduce Marley to the world's stage.) We asked our fans on WNCW's Facebook page which album we should spin for his 70th birthday today, and this was the overwhelming favorite. As music critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine has written, "With its relaxed, friendly atmosphere and strong bluesy roots, 461 Ocean Boulevard set the template for Clapton's '70s albums. Though he tried hard to make an album exactly like it, he never quite managed to replicate its charms."
