We celebrate the first week of summer -- and Brian Wilson's 6/20 birthday - with this critics' 5-star favorite Monday night. Layering their pristine vocal harmonies with such quirky tools as harpsichords, Theremin, bicycle bells, and barking dogs, 1966's Pet Sounds remains one of the best-produced and most influential rock albums ever released. Yes, it's up there with such milestone classics as The Beatles' Revolver and Sgt. Pepper, which Brian in particular tried obsessively to compete with. "Without Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper wouldn't have happened...Pepper was an attempt to equal Pet Sounds" (Sir George Martin). Wouldn't it be nice if you could hoist up the John B's sail for an hour of summertime perfection? God only knows what we'd do without good music.
