The winner of numerous jazz awards since her 2006 debut, singer Catherine Russell is in the area for a rather rare concert performance in Tryon Friday evening. Her father Luis was Louis Armstrong's longtime collaborator and music director, and her mother Carline Ray worked a lot with Ruth Brown and Mary Lou Williams among others, and Catherine herself has supported artists ranging from David Bowie to Steely Dan to Paul Simon...so we'll have one or two degrees of separation from just about everyone Friday afternoon! Her new release Bring It Back has some wonderful rearrangements from the Jazz Age and Swing Era. Her basic formula: "The freedom to sing the blues, over a swing beat, with a jazz band." Works for us!
