Morning Edition on 8/9/13: Wilkes County Child Advocacy Center

One of the most tragic things that can ever happen is a child getting hurt through abuse of one type or another. Children are the victims of predators, members of their own family, people they trust or people they don't know. When times are rough a parent or parents take it out on the children.

We like to celebrate the life of Jerry Garcia (8/1/42 - 8/9/95) around this time of year, and on Monday night we are pleased to bring you this 1976 release of his.  His 3rd "solo" release, Reflections includes all of the (then) members of the Grateful Dead helping out, as well as JGB mates John Kahn, Nicky Hopkins, Ron Tutt, and Larry Knechtel.  Check out the fine studio versions of "Mission in the Rain", "They Love Each Other", "Comes a Time", and other favorites of the road.  Thanks for the memories, Jerry!

Thursday Night the 8th between 8pm & Midnight: OMAR DYKES - Runnin' With the Wolf

The frontman for blues band Omar and the Howlers  pays homage to another Mississippi native who influenced him and a generation of blues players: Chester Burnett, better known as Howlin’ Wolf.  Riding that fine line between channeling the original and adding his own stamp of originality, Dykes delivers big on standards like "Spoonful", "Wang Dang Doodle", "Back Door Man", and "Smokestack Lightnin'."  Spotlight on Howlin' Wolf's legacy this Thursday night, all night long!

Thursday Night the 1st between 8pm & Midnight: MAVIS STAPLES - One True Vine

An inspiration to MLK with her family band during the Civil Rights Era, a show-stealer for The Band's  star-studded The Last Waltz, near-fiancee to Bob Dylan.... Mavis Staples remains an icon of change, and one of the best voices of America's conscience.  She made some changes once again in 2010 when she collaborated with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy for the Grammy-winning You Are Not Alone, and she continues that great partnership with this new release.
