Monday Night September 9th at 8pm: OTIS REDDING - The Dock of the Bay

It was supposed to be the beginning of a terrific new chapter in Otis Redding's career: a monumental leap in depth and success, as evidenced by the title track, recorded just days before his death (and that of 4 members of his band The Bar-Kays) in a plane crash on December 10, 1967.  Instead, the album became a posthumous closure for one of the greatest voices in Southern Soul.  The other songs were a mix of singles and B-sides gathered together by producer/guitarist Steve Cropper going back to '65, giving it little cohesion.  And, it remains one of his most revered albums, 45 years later.

Thursday Night the 12th between 8pm & Midnight: MARK KNOPFLER - Privateering

We in the U.S. have had to wait an extra year for its release (due to record label legal red tape), but now we finally have this new double album from the former Dire Straits' frontman.  It features impeccable musicianship from such greats as Kim Wilson, Richard Bennett, Guy Fletcher, Michael McGoldrick, John McCusker, and Tim O'Brien: “This is the band I have been working toward my whole life,” says Knopfler himself.

Wild Ponies is the band comprised of singer/songwriting duo Doug & Telisha Williams.  Formerly from the mountains of Virginia, they have recently moved to Nashville, and released a fine new collection of songs.   They play Charlotte Thursday night.  "Doug & Telisha Williams have the old-time, pre-70s country, mountain & honky-tonk road house music all blended together into their own whiskey - open the jar and have a pull." — Darrell Scott.

Live Thursday the 5th at 3pm: WARREN HOOD BAND

Warren Hood was just in Studio B last May, as part of Hayes Carll's backing band.  His own trio has singer/pianist Emily Gimble and guitarist Willie Pipkin, and the spotlight's on them this time before heading to shows in Black Mountain Thursday, Spartanburg Friday, and Saluda Sunday.  Warren, the son of the late Champ Hood from Spartanburg and Austin's Uncle Walt's Band, also plays regularly with his band The Waybacks; he's one of the most dynamic, expressive fiddlers in Americana.

Morning Edition on Friday, Sept. 6: 'Flashes Of War', By Katey Schultz

Katey Schultz is a resident of Burnsville and a writer. Or perhaps I should say she is a writer and a resident of Burnsville. "Flashes of War" by Katey Schultz is indeed about war, but not in any sort of conventional way. I likely would not have seen it at the bookstore and "jumped" on it as something to read for the pure pleasure of reading. But I know better now.
