Morning Edition on Tuesday, July 23: My Name is Nancy The Journals of Nancy Hanks Lincoln
First of all, I must warn that this book is INTENDED FOR MATURE AUDIENCES due to adult situations. The second thing I must stress is that this book is a work of fiction. But for anyone that has passed through or lives in Rutherford County, NC, it certainly could be true, because it is based on historical fact as well as legends that have been passed on through the generations ever since the late 1700's when the story began.
Deborah Keller, a resident of Rutherford County, has really done her homework in researching the claim that Nancy Hanks Lincoln, the mother of Abraham Lincoln, did live in Rutherford County for a while back then. Then, as the legend goes, while she was here she gave birth to a child that later went on to become our greatest president.
Keller says she fell in love with the story and in particular the person who was Nancy Hanks Lincoln. She set out to discover what she was like - as a girl, a woman and a mother. "My Name Is Nancy" fills in the blanks to make a great story about being Nancy Hanks Lincoln way back then. And, regardless of whether you are a believer of the legend or not, this is a great read!
