Richard Thompson’s latest album, Electric, produced by Buddy Miller, comes in what is arguably his most creatively productive period in a career that stretches back some 45 years. Whether featuring electric or acoustic guitar, the songs are built around the tightly focused core of Thompson’s current trio: drummer Michael Jerome (Better Than Ezra, John Cale) and bassist Taras Prodaniuk (Lucinda Williams, Elvis Costello) complementing the leader through a full range of emotional explorations. Stop in and hear what the fuss is all about during the Peak of the Week, Thursday at 8 pm.
We have D.C.'s finest bluegrass band for your Monday night feature this week, as we tip our hat to mandolinist/tenor singer John Duffey on his birthday with one of his first recordings with The Scene. And we pay our respects to the late Mike Auldridge, a pioneer of the dobro who passed on 12/29/12. You'll hear some familiar non-bluegrass songwriters covered here (Hank Williams, John Prine, Gene Clark), but be sure to also listen for Duffey's take on "Small Exception of Me", and of course the fine lead vocals of the late John Starling.
Brownout is the Austin-based psychedelic funk alter-ego of the Grammy-winning Latin big band Grupo Fantasma. The 8 (or more?)-piece band visits Studio B for the first time on their way to their Friday night show in Asheville, with songs from their latest release "Oozy".
The 3rd Annual Sustainable Viticulture Conference is coming, and it is DIRTy! Chuck Blethen, owner of the Jewel of the Blue Ridge Vineyard, founding member of the Sustainable Agriculture Viticulture Institute (SAVI) and organizer of the conference, spent some time talking with me yesterday about his favorite topic - wine - and how to make it sustainably and tasty.
These two fine (and married) singer/songwriters in Americana & Country have another collaboration, this time with notable covers by Dave Alvin and Robert Earl Keen, among other WNCW favorites. Tune in as Brad mixes each of the tunes into the Thursday night mix. Happy Valentine's Day!
